Revisiting Beazley IR Plan is Mr Rudd's First Test, Says Business
“The best interests of Australia are served in having an Opposition that is effective and that holds the Government to account. To that end, we wish Mr Rudd well in his new position said Mark Grimson, CEO of IBC.
“Mr Rudd’s first actions must be to re-visit Mr Beazley’s industrial relations policies to provide a workable alternative rather than to simply say it will throw Work Choices out”
“More than anything else, it has been Federal Labor’s workplace relations policies that have made it look uninspiring and backward looking.
Mr Grimson said whilst acknowledging the Federal Opposition has opposed the Government’s IR Laws, it has to demonstrate that it has alternatives that address the concerns of the business community as well as the Union movement.
Under the Beazley Plan, Federal Labor is committed to:
- Scrapping 1,000,000 AWAs and ending individual agreements
- Forcing collective agreements on individual workers (even if individuals do not want them)
- Re-introducing the unfair dismissal regime for every small business and ensuring the return of “go away” money
- Compulsory right of entry for trade union officials to every Australian workplace irrespective of union membership
- Intervention by Labor appointed umpire into any negotiations
“The first test of Leadership for Mr Rudd is to outline alternative polices that are forward looking, ensuring we have a modern, flexible economy rather than moving Australia’s workplace relations system back to the 1970s. What Australia’s businesses want and deserve in a very competitive environment is certainty with an industrial relations regime.
“The fact is business does not want to return Australia’s workplace relations to the bad old days of union control, paying “go away” money and six separate workplace relations systems.
