NSW Workplace Safety: Stein Report must be released

The Illawarra’s largest business organisation, Illawarra Business Chamber has called for a vital report into proposed workplace safety law changes which was presented to NSW Industrial Relations Minister John Della Bosca in April 2007 to be released.
The NSW Government commissioned the Stein Report in 2006 and a year after it received the report it is yet to be made public.
“This report has been sitting on the Minister’s desk for a year – the time has come to dust it off and release it”, said Mark Grimson, CEO of Illawarra Business Chamber.
“The workplace safety debate is an important debate for NSW workplaces.  According to the ABS we have in NSW injury rates worse than the Australian average. The Stein Report will make a contribution to the workplace safety debate in NSW and it should be in the public domain.
“Given the recent announcement by the Deputy Prime Minister, which released details of a review of OHS legislation in Australia. This review should make a significant contribution to the very questions about how to proceed to harmonised national OH&S legislation.
“Dozens of community, business groups and trade unions made submissions to the Stein Review and a year after its completion no one is any the wiser about its findings.
"Who knows what the findings of the Report are? - Let's see the Report and then continue the debate about how we can improve workplace safety in NSW and build a more co-operative approach between government, employers, unions and WorkCover.
“IBC has already sought under FOI legislation this report into workplace safety. The time has come for the Stein Report to be made public".
