NSW unemployment hits 5.4%:Economy needs kickstart now

The latest jobs figures have revealed that NSW’s unemployment rate has resumed its upward march, increasing from 5.2% to 5.4%.  The NSW economy now desperately needs a kickstart to save NSW jobs.

“The business community has been calling on the NSW Government for months for a program to kickstart the NSW economy and that call has now become even more urgent,” said Les Dion, President of the Illawarra Business Chamber.

“Premier Rees must use the upcoming Jobs Summit to turn NSW’s lagging fortunes around; otherwise the 10,000 people who have joined the unemployment line in the last month won’t be the last.

Mr Dion said that the Federal and NSW Government’s were sending mixed messages to business operators with the Federal Government providing economic stimulus packages and the NSW Government raising taxes in the November mini-budget.

“Illawarra businesses are crying out for tax relief not tax hikes.  Increasing taxes on businesses during this economic downturn is putting jobs and businesses at risk of being lost.

“NSW risks becoming the premier state in economic decline and unemployment, not the nation’s leading state.” Mr Dion concluded.
