NEWS RELEASE
IBC Welcomes State Government Announcement on Red Tape - 17 January 2006
The Illawarra Business Chamber has welcomed today’s announcement by the State Government to undertake a review of Government “red tape” and to make a referral to IPART of various compliance issues.
“Cutting compliance costs is a central component in making business more competitive”, said IBC’s President Terry Wetherall.
“The dedicated review of red tape on small business to be lead by Minister David Campbell is particularly welcomed, said Mr Wetherall.
“Reducing compliance costs is as important to many small businesses as tax relief.
“Small businesses carry a heavy compliance burden which is often not recognised by Government. Small businesses are by their nature “time poor” and often it is the red tape that can make a small business uneconomic.
“The sector by sector review will allow businesses to make practical recommendations to Government and we will be active in seeking practical suggestions and improvements from our members.
“The NSW Government is currently undertaking a Review of the NSW Occupation Health and Safety Act. Twenty four employer groups including the IBC and Australian Business Limited have joined together in presenting to Minister Della Bosca a combined submission for the Review.
“The administration of the current OH&S Act is the number one concern of business.
“Red tape does not help create or make workplaces safer and we would hope that the complexities of that Act and its regulations be addressed, particularly in relation to the application of the absolute duty of care.
Mr Wetherall said for the Government’s plan to work it needed to focus on practical issues that small businesses faced every day.
“We need to change the culture where business is seen by many in the public service as a nuisance rather than the wealth and job creators for the State.
The Premier’s decision to abolish the vendor duty, cut workers compensation premiums, and establish the Expenditure Review are all welcome developments.
“The Illawarra Business Chamber and its members are looking forward to working with the State Government in identifying areas to cut red tape”
