IBC Urges State Government to Act on WIN Stadium

The Illawarra Business Chamber is today urging the NSW Government to act now to prevent the city’s main sporting stadium becoming a white elephant.

A NSW Government commissioned report has found that without a $46 million investment, the western grandstand at WIN stadium will be rendered unusable in 5 years time.

“This redevelopment goes beyond sport and has the potential to generate some much needed jobs. The report found that a redevelopment of the stadium could generate 1000 direct and indirect jobs in the region during the 2 year construction period and pour $19 million into the area, said Les Dion, Illawarra Business Chamber President.

“Wollongong has just lost one sporting team – the Illawarra Hawks – now it is at risk of losing its only remaining national team, the St George Illawarra Dragons.

“A world-class stadium also opens up new opportunities for the region to host major sporting events and new national teams. The upgrade is critical to South Coast United’s bid to join the A-League. It would also help the region attract major events, such as matches associated with Rugby Union and Football World Cups should Australia be selected to host these events in the future.

“Last year the Illawarra Business Chamber joined forces with South Coast Labour Council to get this issue on the agenda. Now it is the NSW Government’s turn to deliver the funds to build the new stand,” concluded Mr Dion.
