IBC Calls on Government to Stay the Course with OH&S Bill
Illawarra Business Chamber CEO Mark Grimson has joined other NSW business leaders in a joint letter this week to all Members of the NSW Cabinet calling on it to support the Draft OH&S Bill released by John Della Bosca in May 2006.
The letter follows reports that the Government has backed off from supporting its Draft Bill that had employer and trade union support when it was released by John Della Bosca.
“At the time IBC congratulated John Della Bosca AND David Campbell for producing a Draft Bill that was sensible and smart. Now it appears left wing trade unionists are trying to stop the Draft Bill”, said Mr Grimson.
“Earlier this year there was widespread view that the Draft Bill was good for NSW. It made OH&S fairer and did so in a way that kept our workplaces safe.
“The Draft Bill takes a common sense approach to OH&S, brings NSW more into line with other jurisdictions in Australia and as importantly, furthers the aim of making NSW workplaces safer.
“The draft legislation is the most practical demonstration to employers that NSW is open for business and was welcomed by employers throughout the State.
“It was the Government’s own draft bill, it was supported by the Opposition, businesses and unions – and now the Government appears to be walking away from it.
“It was our hope that the Government would maintain its original timetable and that by now the legislation would be in place. That hasn’t happened and I am very concerned by reports that the Government has caved in on this matter.
“Recent decisions against the NSW Government in relation to a string of OH&S matters before the NSWIRC have demonstrated what many of the State’s businesses face every day, namely an inflexible system where simple concepts like common sense and practicality have no place.
Mr Grimson called on the Government to introduce its Draft Bill and pass it this session.
“Employers need to know where both political parties stand on the issue prior to the election.
“This issue is the litmus test for business regarding our assessment of the Government’s commitment to NSW being “open for business”.
“Given that after this session, the Parliament will not sit until around May next year, I do not consider this call for the matter to be debated in the current session to be unreasonable.
